Idaho CityIdaho City was originally a gold mining town. As a matter of fact, after gold had been discovered in the Boise Basin prospectors poured into the Boise Basin area by the thousands. ( Boise Basin area contains the communities of Idaho City, Centerville, Pioneerville, Placerville and Quartzburg ) Idaho City became the largest town in the still territory and was central to commercial activity. At the peak, Idaho City had more than 250 businesses. It was a bawdy, lusty town where whiskey was cheaper than water and life was cheap, too. Despite the atmosphere of lawlessness, Idaho City flourished. Within three years of its founding, the city had surpassed Portland, Oregon, as the most populous in the Northwest. And no wonder: during the gold rush more than $250,000,000.00 worth of the precious yellow metal was taken from the Boise Basin. After the rush, gold prospectors left in droves.

Today, Idaho City is a small mountain town. Many from Boise visit this beautiful town and several even commute back and forth, just to live in the mountains. Here one can wake up and look out their window to see everything from wild turkeys to elk and wolf. There are many back roads to explore and mountain tops to climb.
