First NAHB Green Home in Boise Broke Ground 15 years Ago

Scott Flynn was a leader in the community for the green movement in the early 2000s, Willowgreens was developed as a sustainable greenbelt community, Boise's first. This home was also Scott's personal home if I remember correctly.

Certified green homes use a holistic approach to the construction process, which incorporates environmental considerations into every phase of the building procedure.

There are 7 Guiding Principles of the National Association of Home Builder’s (NAHB) Green Building Program that take these environmental considerations into account. They are:

  1. Lot Design, Preparation, and Development
  2. Resource Efficiency
  3. Energy Efficiency
  4. Water Efficiency
  5. Indoor Environmental Quality
  6. Operation Maintenance and Homeowner Education
  7. Global Impact

Flynner Homes satisfied Principle 1 by utilizing an infill lot, establishing a knowledgeable team, managing stormwater using low-impact development, and utilizing a common driveway.

How did they satisfy Principle #2?

  • Efficient floor plan
  • Advanced framing techniques
  • Pre-cut and pre-assembled building systems
  • Large cover entry
  • Large roof overhangs surround the entire home
  • French drain around the foundation
  • Water resistant barrier behind siding
  • Flashing around windows, doors and roof/wall junctures
  • Recycle wood, cardboard, and metals
  • Wood from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Program
  • Materials from renewable resources, such as Marmoleum natural-fiber flooring
  • Products that are grown, harvested, processed and shipped within 300 miles of road or 1000 miles of rail
  • Recycled-content building materials, such as carpet, insulation, tiles, Hardie siding, cabinets and hardwood floors.
  • Products that contain fewer resources than traditional products, such as I-joists and James Hardie Siding
