Holland Realty merges with Spokane group Main Idaho Real Estate Insights
Holland Realty, based on Emerald Street in Boise, is merging with Coldwell Banker Tomlinson Group, Spokane, the firms said in a statement July 9.

John Holland co-founded Holland Realty, which has nearly 200 agents and is one of the largest residential real estate firms in Idaho. He will co-manage Coldwell Banker Tomlinson Group Treasure Valley with Larry Larraway, whose Boise-based Aspen Realty in 2007 was acquired by Tomlinson Northwest, a business unit of Coldwell Banker Tomlinson Group.

Holland, who has been in the business 30 years, said the merger creates a firm with “a powerful position and global marketing muscle in a region that is increasingly being discovered by those who are interested in moving to a place where quality of life is a priority.”

Coldwell Banker Tomlinson Group, founded 70 years ago, said it is the third largest brokerage in the Northwest and is a leader in markets including Coeur d’Alene, Sandpoint, McCall and Lewiston in Idaho and Tri-Cities and MosesLake in Washington. Officials said they liked Holland Realty’s leadership, service, and marketing strength in segments including new construction.

Coldwell Banker Tomlinson Northwest President Fred Meyer, who is based in north Idaho, said the merger gives Holland Realty agents an international marketing presence, additional marketing tools including Web-based systems, and national branding. As Americans move into emerging markets like Idaho, a national real estate brand “becomes a builder of trust and of marketing strength that real estate clients demand.”

Financial details were not disclosed.

Re:Holland Realty merges with Spokane group
I had heard rumors about companies looking at acquiring Holland Realty but I would not have guessed it would have been Tomlinson since they had just acquired Coldwell Banker Aspen Realty.

It was ironic that I was talking to Fred Meyer back in November of 2007 in Coeur d'Alene at the Idaho Association of Realtor's Conference about the Boise market, but he wasn't at liberty to discuss the details of acquiring Larry's company since it wasn't quite done yet.

Larry Larraway told me a few months ago that he was very pleased with the process and said that he was going to stay onboard for years to come. I saw John Holland at a function for the Whitetail Resort which is continuing it's build out in McCall but didn't talk to him that night. I had no clue he was probably already in negotiations to sell Holland Realty at that time, but if he was hoping to close this deal to fund a great retirement home in Whitetail, that dream might be a reality. At least I know I would love to have been there to buy a homesite for me instead of previewing for my clients!

The interesting thing to watch for me will be how the agents shift as a result. I know some of the agents at Coldwell Banker have already left since they were extremely loyal to him. It was a minimal change to those agents since they were already aware of the tools and resources available through the Coldwell Banker franchise and were used to paying the franchise fees. Since this will be a brand new experience for most of the Holland agents, it will be interesting to see what the impact will be on agent retention over the next six months at Holland (or should I say . . . Coldwell Banker)?

Maybe I should be spending my time calling the agents personally trying to recruit them to Progressive Realty Corporation instead of typing a response to this blog (grin).
