Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
Is it just me or is it ironic that the builders on this list are also the same builders that pay Trey to advertise on this site? I guess this means money can buy you credibility. I know several other great builders in this valley who are not on this list, yet build great homes and have great reputations. Just thought I would point out the obvious.

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
Those are some great comments and you are not the first to say them. As long as you made the points, I will take a moment answer them.
1) Any builder can be listed in the Subdivision pages at no charge. Yes clients get links.
2) Any builder or Realtor can add Community profile at no charge. yes clietns get links and logos displayed.
3) There is a freeeee section that any builder can be included in. It is called Construction Excellence. It is free and any builder, client or not, can get a review from a client posted! There are numerous builders that are not clients with recommendation! Yes, clients get links and llogo displayed.
4) Yes there is a directory for clients who would like more exposure. This is not just somehting I do as a relief from boredom.
5) The website does not rank or rate builders, it just provides information. Some may derive credibility from a qualification or credential, some don't.
6) No there are not negative reviews, although we validate every recommendation. I even had a builder's mother submit a recommendation one time. Even though the builder built her home, we did not post it.
6) There are not negative reviews because we only promote recommendations from clients. You may disagree, and I would argue with you but it is just not part of our philosophy and there many are other websites that do offer this service. We simply don't. If you would like to talk about at length, my number is 724-9636 and we can meet for coffee- it s a great discussion I have had at length many times.

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
I accidentally deleted the comment about the change in the name of the website from BuildingCredibility.com. Please repost your comment, honest mistake.

The reason I changed the name was for two reasons-
1) The first reason is quite simply I did not believe that first time visitors were able to quickly derive from the name what the website is about. Since the name change, the bounce rate has dropped.
2) It turns out that no one can spell the word C R E D I B I L I T Y. I would say better than 9 out of 10 meetings I have, people either ask me how to spell it or misspell it.

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
Trey,
Thanks for the response. I definitely learned some things about the site. My comment was mainly based on the fact that the builders on this list seem like the ones that pay for the advertising, and so the fact that the post says the site is "determined to become the best resource to research home builders" just seems like a conflict of interest to me.

Don't get me wrong -- I think your site is great. Always great info, it's just hard not to be biased when there's money involved.

Maybe I'll give you a call sometime. I'd love to have some lunch and talk about things.

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
Here is a great story. I have been working on the name change for two years. I offered to buy this domain name at a fair price from a person locally but the person said "no." About 4 months ago, it was available for $14. I bet he is kicking himself now.

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
If you have a builder that your would like to post a negative experience about go to www.RateYourBuilder.com. They would appreciate your feedback.

If you had a great experience and would recommend them, recognize them for Construction Excellence, follow the links on this site. The builder and people researching Idaho home builders would appreciate it.

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
It's an interesting debate to be sure. You have a lot of valid points, I'm sure you've had this discussion a lot with people. It's just tough not to be biased, that's all I'm getting at.

I appreciate your responses. Funny story about the domain name!

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
BuildIdaho has also produced videos of Realtors, builders and other industry professionals that are not clients.
We regularly have Parade of Home surveys that list all builders in the Parade of Homes.
We regularly post builder activity lists that include all builders.
We include reports from a variety of people in the industry that are not clients.
I had to point out more things to validate myself.

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
I just came upon this post and found it quite interesting. I have been a regular visitor to buildidaho for quite some time, mainly for the interesting articles, reports, and statistics that I find. No offense Trey, but I kind of have to agree with what these other posts have said.

There definitely seems to be a conflict of interest here and there is bias that you cannot deny. In fact you alluded to it in your follow up posts. You say any builder or realtor can post in certain directories, however they don't get links and logos displayed. I believe this constitutes a bias as far as I understand the meaning of the word. These "clients" are given preferential treatment on the directories with links and logos while non paying clients are not.

In my opinion, the only way to eliminate the bias on the site is to allow everyone the same opportunity to post links and logos on the directories or don't allow anyone at all. An idea...you could have a separate directory for paying clients and you could acknowledge that the directory is in fact based on who pays for it, and not necessarily on who in credible.

I think that if you post a Idaho home builder directory that "rocks" like this one you should either make it comprehensive (include CBH, Hubble, DR Horton, and all the homebuilders) or just make a note that the list is basically a list ofthe "incredible" builders who pay you monthly to help them in their marketing efforts.

Thanks for all the great info and I will continue to visit the site. I just wouldn't mind if the bias disappeared or was at least openly acknowledged. Thanks!

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
Great diiscussion. I am putting you guys on the Board.

I have obviously researched this topic extensively and it is very complicated. One underlying suggestion you and several people have made is an open forum where people can rate their builder. One of the unique components of a home purchase is the emotional factor. Another is that we are talking about real local people who work hard to build a business and reputation here locally. In the world we live in, anyone could post a comment anonymously, even false comments. In the world we live, they have to get posted, like these commments. That means if a builders competition want s to truly hurt a builders credibility without being accountable, they could. If someone was bored and just wanted to have fun with someone's reputation, they could. What if a subcontractor gets fired for shody work by a great builder. The sub could post a comment. How credible would the website be then?

I did not post this to argue, this is a great discussion and I would appreciate your feedback. Rating a local company is much different than rating a VCR where thousands of the same thing are produced.

By the way- each of you posted anonymously and did not sign it?

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
The Better Business Bureau only notes complaints. Although a great resource, if there are no complaints, what does that mean?

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
Trey, you are ignoring my point about the bias. But that is ok since I see you have no defense for it. This is evident by you continuing to sway the argument toward being able to post negative or positive comments or whatever. I am just talking about the bias in the directories where paying customers have links and logos and non paying ones don't. It is as simple as that. And I posted anonymously because I knew my comment above that agreed with the other anonymous posts would be hard for you to take. You can look up my email and we can talk privately if this is really bothering you. Besides I'd probably have to pay for an account to be able to post stories and articles under my own specific blog.

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
Ah, maybe I don't understand your comments. Are you saying that because I don't post all builder's credentials and qualifications, the site is biased? Then yes, that wold be hard to argue against. My intent was not to be biased, just give clients more exposure. Under Home Search I try to list every builder that has listings in the MLS- look under Home Search. This is free also. I am sure clients would like other builder names removed from the site and then it would look extremely biased.

[email protected]

ps- i don't reveiw the comments database for emails, I just don't

Also, we have had it for a while but I have been working on it this week, there is a FORUMS section under Home Buyer Tools. Registered Users can post and subscribe to posts and discussions.

Re:Boise Idaho Home Builder Directory
Trey, your website is your business and how you make money. Paying customers deserve to get all the glory on your site (and I ain't one of 'em). If people want to rate their builder for good or for worse, there are dozens of other sites for that and if the customer had a real problem, they can report it to the BBB.

The fact that Trey meets with his builder clients regularly gives him the credibility to call them credible.

Knowing Trey, I doubt he would call a builder credible just because they want to pay him to lie in their behalf. Trey is above that. It won't ever be an all inclusive list of truly credible builders (for one, I'm not on there yet) but that's okay. I like the website and the topics discussed and the videos of my friends in the industry, even though they are my competition.
