Idaho's 2014 ENERGY STAR? Partner of the Year Main Idaho Real Estate Insights

Brighton Homes of Boise, Idaho earns award for protecting the environment through superior energy efficient new homes

Boise, Idaho, April 3, 2014 –
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named Brighton Homes as a 2014 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for its outstanding contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through building ENERGY STAR homes. Brighton’s accomplishments will be recognized in Washington, D.C. on April 29, 2014.

Brighton HomesBrighton Homes, an ENERGY STAR partner since 2009, is being honored for its work in building new homes that meet ENERGY STAR requirements for energy efficiency.

As evidenced in meetings with potential buyers, having an EnergyStar certified home has become a crucial part of the homebuying process. EnergyStar is a key component in our commitment to build energy efficient homes, it gives us actual metrics to back it up, and it is an integral part of our marketing. We were awarded the 2012 NW EnergyStar Regional Builder of the Year Award.

A few of the things that Brighton does differently that sets them apart include having a limited number of companies they use to ensure consistency, designing for efficient HVAC layouts, and most importantly educating their trade partners. Brighton University was set up to hold regular meetings for trade partners and staff to educate on proper techniques, new technology, trends, and best practices.

“Brighton Homes takes pride in building our homes to ENERGY STAR requirements,” said Lars Hansen, President of Brighton Homes. “ENERGY STAR homes are more comfortable and ensure long-term savings for our customers on their energy bills, all while protecting the environment.”

“I applaud Brighton Homes for setting a high bar for new home construction with ENERGY STAR,” said EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe. “These builders are helping homebuyers save money on energy bills and live in more comfortable homes, all while protecting the environment and fighting climate change.”

The 2014 Partner of the Year Awards are given to a variety of organizations to recognize their contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through superior energy efficiency. Award winners are selected from the 16,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

ENERGY STAR certified new homes use substantially less energy for heating, cooling, and water heating; in fact, homeowners who buy ENERGY STAR certified homes can expect to use 15-30% less energy than a typical new home. Currently, over 2,700 home builders across the nation are constructing homes that meet EPA’s strict requirements for energy efficiency. More than 1.5 million American families now live in ENERGY STAR certified homes.

Through 2013, with help from ENERGY STAR, American families and businesses have saved $297 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 2.1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

About Brighton Homes
Brighton Homes Idaho was organized in 1994 to add a construction team to a well-established land development company, Brighton Corporation, in the Treasure Valley. The founder’s desire for the type of company that Brighton Homes would become was reflected in the corporate motto “skillfully designed and masterfully crafted.”  From 1994 until 2008 Brighton Homes sold an average of 35 homes per year.

Brighton Homes sought a clear mission that would provide guidance through the challenges that were certainly to come. It was decided that 100% participation in the EnergyStar program would be the best way to convey to buyers, trade partners and competitors that Brighton Homes was going to focus more than ever on building the best quality homes possible.

In 2009 Brighton sold 31 homes, a remarkable feat for the time. Today, they are working closely with NW EnergyStar, USGBC Idaho, and the NEEA folks on a new pilot program that will highlight the latest trends in energy efficiency, and capturing energy use data to serve as a model for the building industry.
