People have different motivations in buying a home. We may search for the appropriate number of bedrooms and baths but what makes someone actually pull the trigger?

People have different reasons for buying a home. Some are interested in a place for their loved ones, some convenience, others want something they can relax and enjoy (like a 2nd home) and others see it as an investment.

For most of us, it is how we feel about the home. As we look at the home, it stirs emotions. Maybe it reminds us of something or maybe it looks so good that it not only impresses us but we believe it will impress others. One of the arguments I like to make is that if a home were about a rational choice, there would be more manufactured homes.

So when someone decides to buy a particular home, what are their motivations? All are different but at the end of the day it is about value. What value does the home bring to us and is it the best value for the price. Here are some examples:

1. You could save money and live further away but you would prefer to live closer so the commute is less and you will have more time at home with family. Plus you will save money in gas.
2. You have a two story home with the master upstairs but the time has come to live in a single level house. You would also like to like with others who are in the same place in life.
3. Some people like a house but need to feel like they are getting a deal. They enjoy the negotiating and want the seller to give in to the requested concessions before they fell good about buying.
4. Imagine finding the house you have dreamed of or seeing a house that reminds you of the house you grew up in, a favorite place or it reminds you of somewhere you have been that you really enjoyed like a vacation.

Buying a home is as much about emotions and value as anything. We make choices whether we are buying a $100k home or a million dollar mansion. So what is the best plan?
