List of Major Companies Headquartered in Idaho Main Treasure Valley Life

As the State of Idaho grows as people and businesses move here, we thought it would be interesting to compile a list of major national and international companies that are headquartered here in Idaho. Here is what we found.

While there are plenty of well-known companies and local businesses headquartered here, we focused on major companies that operate across the country and even around the world. Defunct companies headquartered in Idaho and companies who have relocated their headquarters are not included.

Albertsons

Founded in 1939 by Joe Albertson, Albertsons Companies, Inc is the second-largest supermarket chain in North America after Kroger. The first Albertsons Store was built in the corner of 16th and State Streets in downtown Boise and now operates across the country as Albertsons or as one of its subsidiaries Acme Markets, Kings, Safeway, Vons, and more. Albertsons is also the largest employer in Boise with over 273,000 employees.

Amalgamated Sugar Company

The Amalgamated Sugar Company was founded in Ogden, Utah in 1897, later moving its headquarters to Boise. The company refines sugar beets into sugar in plants across Idaho, Utah, and Oregon. The sugar beet factories in Idaho (Nampa, Paul, and Twin Falls) process a combined 4.8 million tons of sugar beets per year. The company’s sugar is marketed under the brand White Satin.

Boise Cascade

Boise Cascade makes and sells engineered wood products, plywood, lumber, and other building materials from their headquarters in Boise. The company was formed in 1957 from the merger of Cascade Lumber Company out of Yakima, WA and the Boise Payette Lumber Company out of Boise. Today, Boise Cascade owns and operates two of the largest Laminated Veneer lumber and I-joist manufacturing plants in the world, and is the second-largest producer of both engineered wood products and plywood in North America. In addition, Boise Cascade uses 99% of all the wood it takes in, meaning almost no waste is sent to landfills from any of its plants and factories.

Buck Knives

Buck Knives was founded in 1902 in Mountain Home, Idaho, and is now headquartered in Post Falls, Idaho, and is credited with inventing the folding hunting knife. Today, the Buck Knives design has become ubiquitous for all folding hunting knives—similar to how Kleenex or Band-Aids have become the catch-all term for facial tissues and adhesive bandages, respectively. Hoyt Buck, who founded the company, and his son, Al, handmade the knives themselves until being able to mass-produce and market them to dealers in the 1950s. Buck Knives have been seen clearly in films like Red Dawn (1984), Scream, and Kill Bill, as well as TV shows like the Dukes of Hazzard and Longmire.

Clearwater Analytics

Clearwater Analytics was founded in Boise in 2004 and has grown tremendously in that time and has been awarded multiple times as a top-tier technology company. Providing automated software for investment accounting, performance compliance, and risk reporting, Clearwater products are used by banks, managers, governments, and many other institutions. Additional offices have opened up in London, New York, Edinburgh, and Nodia, India. In 2016, the Clearwater Building in Downtown Boise was completed as part of the renovation of the City Center Plaza. The building serves as HQ for the company, as well as hosting the Boise State University Computer science department.

ClickBank

ClickBank is an internet retailer and affiliate marketplace that serves more than 6 million clients worldwide. Founded in 1998, it has become the 87th largest Internet retailer in North America and processes over 30,000 transactions a day. In 2011, Revenue Magazine named the company as the top affiliate network in the United States.

CSHQA

The name might not ring a bell, but CSHQA ‘s influence is everywhere. It was founded by one man, William S. Campbell when he moved from Edinburgh, Scotland to Boise to practice architecture. In 1979, it was known as Cline Smull Hamill Quintieri Associates as more partners joined the firm, and in 1985 it was shortened to CSHQA. Since its inception, CSHQA has been a leader in design, innovation, and sustainability. Many of its buildings are LEED certified and designed, and Boise’s Amity Elementary laded the COver of TIME Magazine in 1979 for its forward-thinking design. Other notable projects include:

D.L. Evans Bank

D.L. Evans Bank was founded in 1904 in Albion, Idaho by David Lloyd (D.L.) Evans. The bank weathered the Great Depression, a feat for a small community bank, and has been run by three generations of the Evans Family. D.L. Evans Bank now has 30 branches across southern Idaho and northern Utah and has over $1.4 billion in assets

Dutch Bros Coffee

Dutch Bros Coffee was founded by brother Sane and Travis Boersma. With three generations of dairy farming expertise, the two brothers bought an espresso machine and started having fun experimenting with coffee in their barn. Today, they are known for their fun and upbeat atmosphere, high community engagement, and spreading the “Dutch Luv”. The company has expanded from its Boise roots to the entire West Coast and as far east as Houston, TX.

ESI

Engineered Structures, Inc is headquartered in Meridian and can be seen working in nearly every major construction project in the Treasure Valley. Their commitment to safety, timeliness, community improvement, and high-quality work has helped them pour over 1 million cubic yards of concrete, hand 150,000 tons of steel, and build more than 69 million square feet of retail space since its inception in 1973.

Idacorp/Idaho Power

Idacorp encompasses Idaho Power and Ida-West Energy, making it the largest power supplier in Idaho. Founded in 1989, Idaho Power owns and operates 17 hydroelectric dams, three natural gas power plants, and two coal-fired power plants. 80% of Idaho Power’s energy generation comes from hydroelectric power. Since 2005, Idaho Power has reduced its carbon emissions by 50%, and plans to exit coal power operations to help provide 100% of its power from clean, renewable energy by 2045.

Idaho Candy Company

The Idaho Candy Company was founded in 1901 by Thomas Ovard “T.O.” Smith when he started making and selling chocolates in his garage. In 1909, he opened a factory that still operates today. Products from the Idaho Candy Company are labeled as “Owyhee” after the Owyhee River and Owyhee County where the first factory was opened. The company is most famous for its Idaho Spud Bar, which has gained more than a cult following in Idaho and the surrounding states. 

Idaho Central Credit Union

Founded in 1940, ICCU has grown to be the largest credit union in Idaho. The credit union was founded in Boise and is now headquartered in Chubbuck, next to Pocatello. Their trademark green color can be seen supporting many local events across the state, as well as sponsoring the Idaho Central Arena in Downtown Boise (formerly the CenturyLink Arena) and the ICCU Arena on the University of Idaho campus. 

Idahoan Foods

Idahoan Foods was founded in Lewisville in 1960 and is now based out of Idaho Falls. The company made its mark by producing dehydrated instant mashed potato products that are sold in stores and used by restaurants, businesses, and homes across the nation. 100% of the potatoes used in production are grown, peeled, cooked, and dehydrated in Idaho,

Klim

Klim (pronounced “climb”) was founded in 1999 in Rigny, Idaho, where it remains today. Klim made its mark by producing motorcycling and snowmobiling clothing, gear, and accessories. In 2012, the company was purchased by Polaris and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the motorsports giant, selling their gear around the world.

Kount

Kount is a cybersecurity company founded and based in Idaho since 2006. Since then, Kount has grown to protect the security of over 9,000 brands across the globe, including Barclays, Staples, GNC, Chase Bank, Conair, and PetSmart. In 2021, Kount joined credit monitoring company Equifax to create new ways to protect people’s identities and credit histories from hacking. Currently, Kountholds over 30 patents with many more pending.

Lamb Weston Holdings

Lamb Weston was founded in 1950 and is headquartered in Eagle, Idaho. They are one of the world’s largest producers and processors of frozen french fries and frozen potato products. Lamb Weston is the primary supplier of potatoes for McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and KFC. When Lamb Weston spun off from ConAgra Foods in 2016, it accounted for 42% of America’s frozen potato market, beating Ore-Ida, Simplot (more on them down below), Cavendish Foods, and McCain Foods. Globally, Lamb Weston is second to McCain foods in market share in 2018.

Micron Technology

Micron was founded in 1978 in Boise as a semiconductor design consultancy. Since then, Micron has grown to be a top global manufacturer of semiconductors, RAM chips, and USB flash drives. Recently, Micron has become the 8th largest computer chip manufacturer in the world (near the bottom of the article), beating Nvidia, Texas Instruments, AMD, and Sony. Micron is also the second-largest employer in Boise with over 31,000 employees.

Pita Pit

Pita Pit was formed in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in 1995, aimed at good, cheap food for college students. Pita Pit came to America in 1999 in Syracuse, NY. In 2005, Pits Pit, Inc was acquired by Pita Pit America, and the whole company became headquartered in Coeur d’Alene. 

Ridley’s Family Markets

Ridley’s was started in 1937 in Payson, Utah. The headquarters was moved to Boise, then to Jerome, where it remains today. Ridley’s Family Markets operates more than 30 stores throughout the Mountain West in Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and Wyoming.

Simplot

The J.R. Simplot Company was formed in 1929 by J.R. Simplot in Delco, Idaho as a potato farming company. Simply expanded the business to dehydrating onions and potatoes for World War II soldiers. From the 1970s through the early 2000s, Simply supplied more than half of all french fries for McDonald’s. According to Forbes, Simplot is the 59th largest private corporation in the world in 2004. Since its founding, the Simplot corporation has been active in philanthropy for local and national organizations. The Simplot world headquarters is located on the JUMP campus in downtown Boise.

TSheets

TSheets was founded in 2006 in Eagle to provide a mobile and web-based employee scheduling and time-tracking app. The app was released in 2008 and was integrated into QuickBooks. In 2015, the company bought a building on Eagle Road and also opened a second office in Sydney, Australia. In 2017, the company was acquired by software giant Intuit. Its business has expanded to HR, accounting, and payroll software and features an open API integration for other companies to use. 

Winco Foods

WinCo was founded in Boise in 1967 under the name Waremart. In 1985 the company established an employee stock ownership plan, and the company has been majority employee-owned ever since. Today, 80% of the company is employee stock. In 1999, the company rebranded to WinCo, which had a dual portmanteau meaning: “Winning Company” as well as the states it operated in at the time, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California, and Oregon. As of 2017, the company operates more than 115 stores nationwide.

Yellowstone Bear World

This isn’t necessarily a well-known company, but it has the fun factor and is nearby the amazing Yellowstone National Park. This park is privately owned and was opened in 1998 in Rexburg, Idaho. Its two main attractions are a drive-through wildlife preserve to observe Grizzly and Black bears, as well as other native wildlife, and the ability to bottle-feed bear cubs. It is the only wildlife park in America where you can do so. There is also a 1-acre free-roaming petting zoo and a small amusement park.
